High School Students Field Work Projects

Introduction

Field work often has a negative image. It sometimes means working unsocial hours, day or night, or being exposed to the heat, cold, sun and wind. That is because field workers are at the heart of our operation. Take civil and architectural engineers, for example, who need to be on the construction site. Or, petroleum engineers who must go to the desert or sea to extraction fields or refinery plants. And electronic engineers, who have to be in the desert, sea or mountains to, say, install vital telephone cables.

In partnership with the Ministry of Education, Dubai Petroleum Establishment has launched a four-month educational program named Dubai Petroleum Establishment Program for Promoting Field Work.

Program Contents

The program consists of:

•  Exploring Field Work - a one-day visit to a site to observe a Dubai Petroleum Establishment employee carrying out their normal tasks and activities. Plus either:

           •  Field Work Experience – here students create their own project which has benefits for their school and/or local community. At the same time, they get valuable first-hand experience on a chosen topic. For example, a student working in the school clinic has the chance to help out a doctor at a medical check-up.

           •  Promoting Field Work – here students get into the fields of research and media. They first chose a topic – such as, Dress code or Staying safe in field work. They then promote their research findings through various media with the guidance of DP communication professionals.

Objectives

The program aims to widen students’ horizons. Rather than the normal office-based job, students get to experience what it is like out in the field -- in the thick of the action. At Dubai Petroleum Establishment, our aim is to break down the stereotypes of field work as a tough or even lesser way of life and career.

Benefits

Tangible benefits for students include certificates and gifts from Dubai Petroleum Establishment. In addition, they get a good taste of the oil and gas industry work environment, and so they can make a well-informed decision if it’s a career they wish to pursue after their studies.
